Carlos Mangual

Carlos M. Mangual was born on a dying planet located in a galaxy far, far way from our own. He was rocketed to Earth by his birth parents to become our greatest hero, but comic books, video games, and science fiction movies distracted him from his original calling. Carlos started drawing at an early age but it wouldn’t be until he saw the Batman movie in 1989 that he would take comics and illustration a little more serious. He decided he wanted to become a comic book artist, but instead joined the C.I.A. where he served our country as a super spy for a little over a decade before being given a burn notice forcing him to rethink his purpose in life.

Carlos is now completing his Bachelor’s degree in graphic design at the International Academy of Design & Technology in Tampa, Florida. On his spare time, between saving people from burning buildings or other dire situations, he’s created A Self Portrait Comic, an autobiographical romantic comedy about his search for true love, which he both writes and illustrates. He’s currently employed by Digital Bytes, a small company that is putting together an on-line video game. Carlos still watches Saturday morning cartoons, has a vivid imagination and aspires to be the official mattress tester at the Playboy mansion someday. And yes ladies, he is single.

Carlos, great work great persona. ; This is definitely taking your skills as a comic artist and putting them to the test.

Your presentation however needs a bit of tweaking! You mentioned “I wanted to play it safe and do comic style to see what I’m all about”

    Well Carlos:

Without big risk, means no big reward. Push yourself past your comfort zone and I definitely see a lot more progression in you. You got the talent, gotta find the execution.

  10. circle of dust Says:

You know, I went into a Navy museum recently. I didnt have time to stay and ask questions but my eyes were drawn to three things that did not seem to fit there among all of the serious medals, and weaponry. They were three large painings of a Navy sailor who was visiting Japan. The paintings were done very, very much in a comic book art style. I thought:”what an awesome artist, to have done something so different!” I loved them, I thought they were by far the most beautiful things in the museum! I only took my eyes off of them because a Navy Commander came into the museum, which meant that I had to get back to work. This work of yours gives me the same feeling when I look at it. Beautiful Job Mr.Mangaul!

  58. MAADRINA ISA Says:

CHARLIE, DIOS TE BENDIGA. ESPERO QUE TODO SALGA BIEN. HACES UN TRABAJO ESTUPENDO. TE AMO.

  59. Audrey Says:

It’s not as bad as the judges make it out to be in your critique. I see the sounds in your image. It’s like a urban twist of a Kandinsky with the swirls and waves representing sound coming from the heart of the city. The bold primary colors make it feel more alive to me as well. I do unfortunately have to agree with them when it comes to all the text. I think with the theme you have here, less would have been more. For example I can’t read whatever you have at the bottom so it just detracts.

Keep up the good work! Good luck with the voting! I’m sure this whole experience has helped you grow as an artist already in many ways!

  60. suzieqalso Says:

I thought it was a wonderful crosssection of urban, using appropriate coloration for the subject matter. Well done!

  61. rvelez25 Says:

Hello my brotha. You did wonderful. I did not approve at all of the comments they gave. You have great talent and you will go far. Always be positive. Remember what I’ve said in the past. YOU CAN DO IT!!! :)

  62. tanya jimenez Says:

Hey primo los trabajos estan brutales. Siempre positivo.
    Voy a ti!!!!

  63. Tara Says:

Carlos, it was a joy to watch you during the final show last night. In an hour full of fake, boring butchering of the English language, you were really the only one who came out with their real self and injected actual personality into the night. You have magnificent work, and I’m positive that you’ll find good things in your future! Good luck!
